Solar Companies Serving the South Shore, MA — An Honest Comparison

By Dave Simmer, NABCEP-Trained Solar Designer | Scituate, MA | solardavema.com

Who are the solar companies serving the South Shore of Massachusetts and how do they compare? Homeowners here typically compare a mix of national installers (like Sunrun and Tesla) and regional or local installers (like Boston Solar, Trinity Solar, My Generation Energy, ACE Solar, and independents like me). The right choice depends entirely on your roof complexity, equipment preference, and whether you want a dedicated point of contact.

I should be upfront about my bias: I'm an independent local installer (you can read more about my background here), so take this comparison with that in mind. But I've been doing this since 2011, and the facts below about how these companies operate are accurate and checkable.

    Boston Solar

Boston Solar is a well-established regional installer based right here in Massachusetts, with over 6,000 installations under their belt and a strong reputation. They operate with a dedicated sales team and their own company service crews, offering a 30-year system warranty on their contracted equipment lines. If you're looking for a larger company structure but want to stay local to the state, they are a solid option.

Where an independent installer like me differs is the point of contact. With a regional company, the person who sells you the system is rarely the person who designs it, and neither of them will be the one on your roof. I handle the assessment and design myself, and I'm the one you call years later if there's an issue, which cuts through a lot of red tape.

    Sunrun

Sunrun is the largest residential solar installer in the U.S., operating nationwide with a massive footprint. They are heavily focused on their own financed system packages, particularly leases and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), driven by a large commissioned sales force. They frequently subcontract the actual installation work to local partners in Massachusetts.

The difference here is scale versus customization. Sunrun's packages are standardized, whereas I evaluate your specific roof, shading, and local utility rules to recommend the exact equipment that makes sense for your home. Plus, I don't use high-pressure sales tactics or commissioned reps.

Tesla Energy (Tesla Solar / Powerwall)

Tesla Energy brings massive brand recognition and a streamlined, primarily online quote process. They focus heavily on their own ecosystem—Tesla panels, the Solar Roof, and the Powerwall battery—with less emphasis on roof-specific customization. Like many national brands, they often subcontract the installation and handle service through a national support line.

Tesla makes great hardware (I install the Powerwall 3 myself), but their centralized model struggles with the nuances of local Massachusetts permitting and utility rules. If you live in Hingham with HMLP or Braintree with BELD, a national desk often misses the specific municipal rebates and interconnection rules. I know those local details because I work here every day.

    Trinity Solar

Trinity Solar is one of the largest privately-held residential solar installers in the Northeast, operating across several states including Massachusetts since 1994. They use a traditional sales team model to sell contracted equipment lines, but they maintain their own company install and service crews rather than subcontracting the labor.

Trinity brings the stability of a large regional player. However, working with me means you get more flexibility in equipment choices rather than being locked into one contracted line. I can spec Enphase, SolarEdge, REC, or Qcells based purely on what fits your roof's shading profile and your budget best.

    My Generation Energy

My Generation Energy is a family-owned regional installer based on the South Shore and Cape Cod. They have over a decade of local installs, use direct sales, and employ their own local company crews. They've earned repeated recognition from Solar Power World as a top installer.

We operate in a very similar space—we both prioritize local knowledge, quality equipment, and direct accountability over national scale. The main difference is simply the size of the operation; I stay intentionally smaller so I can personally oversee the design and assessment of every system I put my name on.

    ACE Solar

ACE Solar is another strong Massachusetts-based regional player, frequently ranked as the #1 local solar EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) in the state. They use a sales team model, offer multiple equipment brands, and deploy their own company crews for installations.

ACE is a highly capable company for both residential and commercial projects. As an independent, my advantage is the lack of sales overhead and the direct, one-on-one relationship. You don't have to navigate through a sales rep to get straight answers about your roof's viability or the MA SMART program.

    Is SunPower still in business?

This is a question I get a lot right now. SunPower Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in August 2024. However, Complete Solaria acquired its key assets (including Blue Raven Solar) in September 2024 and relaunched under the SunPower name and ticker, later formally renaming to SunPower Inc.

The important part for homeowners: I still install premium Maxeon/SunPower-brand panels directly for South Shore homes as one equipment option among several. Because I'm independent, I can source the best hardware on the market without being tied to the corporate restructuring of any single national installer.

Which one is right for you?

    • If you want the biggest national brand name and have a simple, unshaded roof with a standard utility, national companies like Sunrun or Tesla can work fine.
    • If you want a larger company structure but local accountability, regional players like Boston Solar or Trinity Solar are solid choices.
    • If you have a tricky roof, shading issues, want a battery, or live somewhere with local utility rules like HMLP or BELD, independent installers typically fit better.
    • If you want the same person designing and later servicing your system, without navigating a sales department, an independent local installer is your best bet.
