The Paperwork Side of Going Solar in MA Is Substantial — It's All Handled. You Never Chase a Form.

Putting panels on a roof is only half the job. The other half is navigating building departments, utility companies, and state incentive programs.

Building permits, utility interconnection agreements, SMART program applications, and net metering enrollment are all handled as part of every project I manage. You won't have to chase down town inspectors or sit on hold with National Grid. It's all included in my process.

    Why Local Permitting Knowledge Matters

    • Every town is different. What Scituate requires for a building permit isn't exactly the same as what Duxbury wants. I know the local building departments across the South Shore, which keeps your project moving.
    • Interconnection timelines matter. National Grid and Eversource have strict engineering and application requirements. I submit clean, accurate paperwork so your system gets Permission to Operate (PTO) without unnecessary delays.
    • Incentive enrollment is critical. Massachusetts has strong incentives like the SMART program (a fixed per-kWh monthly payment) and true 1:1 retail net metering. I make sure your applications are filed correctly so you get every dollar you're owed.

    What I Actually Do

I'm independent, which means you deal directly with me. The structural and electrical engineering documents, permit applications, inspections, and utility interconnection paperwork are all prepared and filed as part of your project — and I stay on top of the town and the utility personally so nothing stalls.

When it's time for the installation, it's done by local, licensed crews I've personally vetted. The work gets done right, and I make sure the paperwork matches the reality on your roof.

    Honest Costs and Numbers

All permitting, engineering, and interconnection fees are included in my project pricing. There are no hidden administrative fees or surprise charges for pulling a permit.

When I give you a quote for residential solar or commercial solar, it covers everything from the initial design to the day you flip the switch. You can read more about what to expect in my Massachusetts solar incentives guide and my SMART program guide.

    Is This Right For You?

If you want a hands-off experience where the administrative headaches are managed by an expert, this is exactly how I operate. If solar doesn't make sense for your home because of shading or roof condition, I'll tell you that too during our free consultation. I won't move a project forward for a system that won't perform.

Common Questions About Permitting & Paperwork

Straight answers on how the administrative side works.

    Who pulls the permits?
I do. I handle all the building, electrical, and zoning permits required by your town. You don't have to go to town hall or deal with inspectors—I manage the entire process.
    How long does interconnection take?
Interconnection with National Grid or Eversource typically takes a few weeks after the physical installation is complete, but it depends on their backlog. I submit all the paperwork early and stay on top of them to get your Permission to Operate (PTO) as quickly as possible.
What is the SMART program and how do I qualify?
The SMART program is a Massachusetts incentive that pays you a fixed rate for every kilowatt-hour your system produces. Eligibility depends on your utility and system size. I handle the entire application process to ensure you're enrolled and receiving your payments.
Do I have to deal with National Grid myself?
No. I handle all communication, engineering documents, and interconnection agreements with National Grid (or Eversource). You'll only need to sign a few documents that I prepare for you.
    Is permitting included or extra?
It's fully included. My pricing covers the entire project from design and equipment to installation, permitting, and utility interconnection. There are no hidden fees for paperwork.
