Replacing Your Roof? I Remove and Cleanly Reinstall Your Panels — Most Roofers Can't.
I'm Dave Simmer. Since 2011, I've designed and installed over 1,800 solar systems across Massachusetts. One thing that surprises a lot of homeowners is what happens when their roof eventually needs replacing: roofing companies are great at roofs, but they aren't equipped to handle high-voltage solar arrays.
That's where I come in. I safely remove your existing panels, coordinate the timeline directly with your roofing contractor, and then return to properly re-mount the racking and recommission the system. I even handle systems I didn't originally install.
Why Specialized Solar Handling Matters
- Roofers shouldn't touch solar hardware. Doing it wrong risks dangerous electrical faults, broken panels, and voided equipment warranties. You need a NABCEP-trained professional to detach and secure the array.
- Proper flashing prevents leaks. When the panels go back up, the racking penetrations must be flashed correctly to protect your brand-new roof. I use industry-standard mounts and sealants designed for New England weather.
- System recommissioning. I don't just bolt the panels back on. I ensure the inverters are communicating, the wiring is secure, and your monitoring app is accurately tracking production again.
What I Actually Do
I'm independent, hands-on, and local. I will show up with a licensed crew to unbolt your panels, disconnect the wiring safely, and store the equipment out of the way. Then, I talk directly to your roofer. Once they finish the shingles, I come back, find the rafters, install the mounts with proper flashing, and get your system producing power again.
Honest Costs and Numbers
A remove-and-reinstall (R&R) isn't a one-size-fits-all price. It depends on how many panels you have, the steepness of your roof, and whether the old racking hardware is still safe to reuse. Most residential R&R projects fall between $2,500 and $5,000. I'll come out, assess your specific setup, and give you a firm number—no surprises.
Is This Right For You?
If you have an aging roof that needs replacing, this is the safest way to protect your solar investment. Even if a national company installed your system and they've stopped returning your calls, I can step in. I'm based right here on the South Shore, and I regularly service "orphaned" systems. If it doesn't make sense to reuse your old hardware, I'll tell you that too.
