Going Solar Doesn't Require a Big Upfront Check
I'm Dave Simmer, and I've designed and installed over 1,800 solar systems across Massachusetts since 2011. One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that you need a massive pile of cash to go solar. You don't.
I walk every homeowner through the real financing landscape in Massachusetts: solar loans, leases, PPAs, and cash purchases. We look at true cost versus monthly impact, and many homeowners end up with a monthly solar payment that's lower than their current electric bill from day one.
Why the Financing Math Matters in Massachusetts
- High electric rates make the math work. We have some of the highest National Grid and Eversource rates in the country, which makes offsetting your utility bill incredibly valuable.
- The federal credit expired for purchases. The federal 25D residential tax credit expired at the end of 2025. That changes the math between owning and leasing. However, third-party owned leases and PPAs can still tap into federal incentives through 2027 and pass those savings on to you.
- State incentives are still strong. If you buy the system, Massachusetts still offers the SMART program (a fixed per-kWh monthly incentive), true 1:1 retail net metering, and a state residential tax credit of up to $1,000.
What I Actually Do
I'm independent, which means I'm not pushing one specific loan product or lease to hit a sales quota. I sit down with you, look at your electric usage, and model the different ways to pay for the system.
I explain the difference between ownership (cash or loan), where you keep all the MA incentives, versus third-party ownership (leases or PPAs), which can offer day-one savings with zero upfront cost. You can read more in my guide to solar financing options in Massachusetts.
Honest Costs and Numbers
If you finance, the goal is usually to swap your unpredictable electric bill for a lower, fixed solar payment. Rates and financial products change frequently, so I share the current options and interest rates during our free solar consultation.
If a cash purchase makes the most sense and gets you the fastest payback, I'll show you that. If a lease or PPA gets you the best financial outcome right now, we'll look at that too. I'll also help you navigate the Massachusetts solar incentives that still apply after the federal credit expiration.
Is This Right For You?
If your roof is heavily shaded, your usage is too low, or solar just doesn't make financial sense for your home, I'll tell you that straight up. I don't use high-pressure sales tactics or fuzzy math to force a deal. I give you the real numbers, and you decide.
