Why Residential Solar Is Growing Fast in Massachusetts
Massachusetts homeowners are adopting residential solar faster than ever — and the reasons are straightforward. The financial case has never been stronger.
Rising electricity costs
National Grid and Eversource rates are among the highest in the continental US — around $0.25–$0.34/kWh all-in. Every kWh your system produces is a kWh you don't buy.
Improved technology & efficiency
Modern solar panels are more efficient, more durable, and carry longer warranties than systems from even 5 years ago. The technology has matured significantly.
Net metering at full retail rate
Massachusetts credits solar owners at the full retail electricity rate for power sent back to the grid — one of the strongest net metering policies in the country.
Home value increase
Solar consistently adds measurable resale value to Massachusetts homes. That added value is fully exempt from property tax assessment increases under state law.
Benefits of Residential Solar Panels
The financial return is the headline — but it's not the whole picture. Here's what residential solar actually delivers for South Shore homeowners.
Lower Electricity Bills
Most South Shore homeowners offset 70–100% of their electric bill. With National Grid and Eversource rates among the highest in the country, those savings add up fast.
Energy Independence
Generate your own power. Add battery storage and you're producing and storing energy that keeps your home running regardless of what the grid is doing.
Protection from Rate Increases
Electricity rates have consistently risen over time. A solar system locks in your energy cost and insulates you from future utility price increases.
Environmental Impact
A typical South Shore residential system offsets tens of thousands of pounds of CO2 over its lifetime — the equivalent of planting hundreds of trees.
Increase Home Resale Value
Studies consistently show solar adds measurable value to homes. In Massachusetts, that added value is exempt from property tax assessment increases.
Massachusetts Incentives
The SMART program, net metering at full retail rate, the $1,000 state tax credit, and the ConnectedSolutions battery program all improve your return.
Is Your Home Right for Residential Solar?
Most South Shore homes are strong candidates. Run through this quick checklist — and keep in mind that a "no" on any single item doesn't automatically disqualify your home. The full picture is what matters.
Even if you answered "no" to one or two of these, reach out. I've designed systems for challenging roofs, moderate usage homes, and everything in between. Let me look at your specific situation.

Residential Solar Systems We Install
Not all residential solar systems are the same. Here's what each type is, who it's for, and what it costs in broad strokes.
Grid-Tied Systems
Your system is connected to the utility grid and takes full advantage of net metering. Excess production flows to the grid as credits; you draw from the grid when production is low. Best ROI, lowest cost. Ideal for most South Shore homeowners.
Note: Shuts off during grid outages for safety (unless battery is added).
Hybrid Systems with Battery
Grid-tied solar plus battery storage (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery). Your home continues running during outages. Qualifies for ConnectedSolutions income from National Grid and Eversource. Adds $10,000–$18,000 to total cost.
Best for homeowners who want backup power and are comfortable with the additional investment.
Off-Grid Systems
Completely disconnected from the utility grid. Requires substantial battery storage and typically a backup generator. Much higher cost, no net metering. Almost never the right choice for residential properties in Massachusetts.
Relevant for remote properties without grid access, which is uncommon on the South Shore.
Residential Solar Financing Options
The sticker price of solar can feel large. But how you finance it changes the monthly math entirely. Here's the honest comparison.
Cash Purchase
Pay the full cost upfront. Best long-term ROI — no interest, full incentive access from day one, shortest payback period. Best option if you have the capital available.
Best total return over system life
Solar Loan ($0 Down)
Finance the system and own it outright. Monthly payments are typically structured to be at or below your current electric bill. You capture all incentives and net metering credits.
Ownership benefits with no upfront cost
Lease / PPA
A third party owns the system. You pay a fixed monthly rate or per-kWh rate. No ownership, no direct access to most incentives. Can still reduce your electric bill with no upfront cost.
Narrower audience in Massachusetts in 2026
Dave's honest take: For most South Shore homeowners who can qualify for financing, a solar loan delivers the best outcome — full system ownership, all incentives, and monthly payments that typically work with your budget from day one. Residential Solar Warranties & Guarantees
A solar system is a 25+ year investment. The warranty coverage behind it matters just as much as the upfront price.
Panel Warranties
25-year product and performance warranty from manufacturers like REC, Maxeon, and Qcells. Performance warranties guarantee panels still produce at 80–90% of rated output after 25 years.
Inverter Warranties
Enphase microinverters carry a 25-year warranty. SolarEdge string inverters typically carry 12-year warranties extendable to 25. One of the strongest in the industry.
Workmanship Guarantee
Installation quality and roof penetration workmanship is backed by an installer warranty. If a leak develops due to installation, it's covered.
Monitoring & Support
All systems are set up with Enphase Enlighten or SolarEdge monitoring. You get real-time visibility into your production and I'm reachable if something looks off.
